Exodus is a grand, towering epic--the crowning Old Testament example of God's intervening to deliver His people.
In Exodus, God creates a nation. So dramatic and pivotal is Israel's liberation from Egyptian oppression that its impact ripples forward through all remaining Scripture like after shocks from a mighty earthquake. For Israel, the Exodus has proven to be the nation's supremely defining event. Through all its later experiences, the people of Israel have recounted, rehearsed, celebrated, and remembered how God brought them from slavery to freedom--from dispirited subjects to free nationhood.
But as compelling as it may be for us today to review this thrilling story, far more relevant is applying it personally and as a church. For the God of ancient Israelis also the God of contemporary, spiritual Israel. He still acts. He still intervenes. He still delivers. He still is creating a people.
