When things are at their worst, people are often at their best, and we sometimes discover things about ourselves we didn't realize before. The horrifying events of September 11, 2001, made us vividly aware of how fragile life can be and how vulnerable an open society is. Yet they also revealed something wonderful about the human spirit.
The insights of that experience have something important to say to the Adventist Church. Although Adventists have a lot to be thankful for, we have a lot to be concerned about, too. In spite of these encouraging accounts, the fortunes of the Church are not uniformly positive. Adventists in North America in particular are facing serious challenges. Among important segments of our membership, the Church is in decline. Financial support for the Church is not what it used to be, a number of members have lost confidence in its institutions and its leadership, and some have serious questions about its teachings. It's a crisis. Unless we meet it, the Adventist Church in North America has a disturbing future.
