Sam and Giny Campbell, driving to their north woods home after a long lecture tour, run head-on into a fierce forest fire. They help fight it and it is a terrifying experience. Out of the flames comes a badly singed old crow, his wing feathers so injured he cannot fly. But he can scold and peck! Sam and Giny adopt him, naming him Midnight. He quickly proves to be a beloved rascal--cute, intelligent, friendly and naughty. He wins the hearts of many who thought there was nothing likeable about a crow.
Arriving at their island home, Sam and Giny are caught up in a whirlwind of exciting and amusing experiences with their wild animal friends. In addition to old friends from earlier books--Loony Coon, Fiddlesticks and Freckles and many others--a host of new creatures make their debut. Schnickelfritz, the baby snowshoe hare, settles down happily in the cage with the surprised Midnight. With the arrival of two porcupines, Jibber and Jabber and two enchanting raccoon kittens, Peanuts and Popcorn, the Campbell treasury of animals increases rapidly.
Sam and Giny's planned jaunt to the Canadian Rockies is made eve more inviting when then hear about a strange old man named Klondike, rumored to have a pet three-legged grizzly bear, who lives near one of the places they plan to visit.
Leaving the Sanctuary in the care of Tom and Carolina Meadows and their twin boys, Kenny and Benny, Sam and Giny set out for the Canadian Rockies to see a man about a bear!
Sam and Giny's exciting search through the mountains and Kenny and Benny's funny and touching experiences as they take care of the Sanctuary make fascinating reading.
Like all Sam Campbell's writings, this new book reveals the rich and rewarding realities of nature, free to all who wish to share them. Sam sees nature with his heart as well as his mind and from him thousands of readers have learned "how to do it," too.
