The book of Hebrews appeared at a critical time in the history of the early church. The destruction of Jerusalem was impending--all signs declared that the event could not be far off--and many of the believers felt that this meant the end of the world. At this we are not to wonder, for even in the minds of some of the apostles the destruction of Jerusalem and the end of the world were closely intertwined, as their question, "When shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?" clearly shows. Matt. 24:3.
