Church. Is it a luxury for Christians with plenty of spare time, an optional blessing to be taken or left as suits our inclination and convenience? Is it a political organization for religious hacks bent on maintaining their positions and power? Is it a haven for hypocrites, who, by their show of piety, hope to deceive God into thinking that they are fit for heaven? Or is it something honorable, enduring, and good?
It is very much in vogue to be cynical about "church." Crooked pastors, garish worship services, popular "feel good" psychology in the pulpit, eerie cultic practices, religious coalitions with an ominous political agenda, interdenominational rivalry and religious wars, all combine to make the whole concept of the church seem repulsive, even dangerous to many people. But these are anomalies. The church, as conceived by Christ had no such marred features. He created the church to be His holy bride through which the glory of His own character would be reflected without distortion.
It is the object of this book to trace God's plan in making the church "His fortress in a revolted world" and His holy bride--such a fortress as the gates of hell shall not prevail against, and such a bride as no tempter can defile or seduce.
