This is the story of Little Treasure, who was born into a Haitian world of drumming, chanting, dancing voodoo worshipers. Plagued by fears, driven tot he point of desperation in their frantic efforts to obtain help from their spirit gods, his family could see in contrast the serenity in the lives of their Christian neighbors. It was Little Treasure's dear friend God Given who talked with him about heaven, who taught him the Ten Commandments, and whose bright, sunny home on the hilltop seemed, in the mind of Little Treasure, only to accent the shadow which covered his own.
Although not without a touch of humor, this is a pathetic story. Written with skill and deep understanding, the author describes in vivid scenes the voodoo ceremonies of Grande Si and Tante Lisetta. It is a story of suspense--not one the reader would willingly put aside.
Many times Little Treasure had accompanied his parents to the voodoo ceremonies, but now that he was twelve, he would attend a special ceremony in which the spirit would tell his future. You are entranced as you see the busy preparations, as you feel the tensions mounting while the incantations to the spirit progress, as you sense the turbulent emotions surging through the bewitched circle, and as you experience the almost crushing weight of disappointment and fear when the spirit pronounces trouble, evil danger, and DEATH on this innocent child.
The days that followed were not easy ones for Little Treasure. Your sympathies will be aroused again and again. Not until the very last will you know the outcome of Little Treasure's fearful struggle against the curse of the voodoo gods.
