This little book has been planned to cover as wide a range as possible in its limited space. Material for children of cradle roll, kindergarten, and primary age is included, and the subjects are grouped as conveniently as possible.
Some of the songs and finger plays may seem at first glance to be too advanced for the cradle roll; but in most instance parts may be used, a chorus here, a stanza there. In the "Mother's Day Song," the chorus alone will constitute a whole song for the very little ones.
Study the finger plays carefully before you attempt to teach them to the children. The motions have been made as natural as possible; in most cases the words themselves suggest the actions. Omit those that seem difficult for very young children.
Do not attempt to teach a great many finger plays at once. Let one be learned thoroughly before beginning another. In this way the supply will not soon grow old. When several have been learned, the children may be permitted to choose the ones they like best.
The few stories given can often be retold without becoming stale of tiresome if the teacher will enlarge upon them by various questions. In the story, "The Flowers' Bedtime," let the children name the different birds. Teach them which left for their homes in the South first. Colored bird pictures will add interest. Name the flowers, and tell which awakened first in the springtime.
Several of the songs may be sung in dialogue form. Others have arrangements for simple two-part singing, soprano and alto.
Lite and animation should be expressed in teaching both songs and finger plays. Let us be joyful!
