Battle Creek is a term full of meaning for many Seventh-day Adventist. To people at all conversant with Adventists history it brings to mind the names James White, Ellen White, the Review and Herald Publishing Association, Uriah Smith, Dr. J. H. Kellogg, the Battle Creek College, and many others--and the Battle Creek fire.
George Washington Amadon spent fifty years of his life as an employee of the Review and Herald Publishing Association, and at the age of about 75 he was ordained as a Seventh-day Adventist minister. He married Martha D. Byington, daughter of the first president of the General Conference. They had two daughters, Katherine and Grace, and one adopted son, Claude. Throughout his versatile life George Amadon at various times filled the role of church elder, church trustee, Sabbath school superintendent, typesetter, printer, foreman, auditor, executive-committee member, writer, editor, and pastor.
In spite of Amadon's mistakes, which indicate he was human, his principled life and example of prayer were an inspiration to his associates in leadership. He governed well his own family and led them to an experiential knowledge of the Saviour. His implicit faith in the Scriptures and his steadfast acceptance of the testimonies of Ellen White are in sharp contrast to a number of his contemporaries who made a wreck of their profession. In view of his close personal friendship with the White family, and therefore his many opportunities to witness firsthand the life of Ellen White, his acceptance of her divine calling should encourage us to do likewise.
