Only occasionally does there cross our path someone we would escribe as an "unforgettable character." For those who know William C. Richli, M.D., he is such a person. Dr. Richli trained as a surgeon but he has another love--mechanical engineering. He has combined the two aptitudes in effective and sometimes unusual ways. He is also a pilot, a "ham" radio enthusiast, a logger, a musician of sorts, and a philanthropist. Above all, he is an individualist.

Bill Richli went with his family to the Philippines to be medical director of the Manila Sanitarium and Hospital, a Seventh-day Adventist institution. After rebuilding and equipping the bombed-out hospital (he was known to come into the examining room wearing a welding mask instead of a surgical mask) he resigned his post in order to work in a large capacity--as a self-supporting missionary surgeon. Rounding up surplus army equipment, he put together a portable surgery unit that he took to far-flung quarters of the archipelago. When he bought a small army plane he was dubbed "an angel of mercy, complete with wings."

Jungle medicine, feats of ingenuity, self-sacrifice, transoceanic solo flights, plane crashes--all these are to be found in Flying Doctor of the Philippines, a story told objectively yet with sensitivity and humor.
