Description
One of the most unusual places in the world is the group of volcanic islands called the Galápagos. Iguanas, which normally live in dry areas, here feed and spend much of their time in the sea. Sunflowers grow to the size of trees and form whole forests. Giant tortoises stalk the bizarre landscape. Although the Galápagos are on the equator, penguins inhabit the rocky shores. But perhaps the most famous creatures there are Darwin's finches. With their various sizes and shapes of beaks, they occupy the roles in nature's scheme filled elsewhere by many different kinds of birds. One finch has learned to make a tool from a cactus thorn and pry insects out of crevices as a woodpecker does.
Strange as they are, the islands are probably best known because Charles Darwin used the plants and animals that he collected there to support his theory of evolution. To many today the islands are living laboratories demonstrating evolution.
Biologist Lester E. Harris, Jr., one of the nation's leading authorities on herpetology, went there "to see the same things Darwin observed." Studying the islands, he wondered, "Didn't Darwin draw bigger conclusions from what he saw than he should have? Didn't he stick his neck out and guess that a lot more happened in nature than really took place?"
In Galápagos: A Creationist Visits Darwin's Island, Harris shows that life there portrays, not evolution, but how a loving God has enabled it to adapt and survive in a sin-damaged world. Whether the reader wants exciting nature stories or is troubled by the conflict between evolution and creation, he will not want to put this book down.
