He was called "the prince of preachers" by Charles Haddon Spurgeon, himself no incompetent when it came to captivating congregations. Born the son of an English tavernkeeper, the youthful Whitefield was "running on a full career to hell" as he himself put it, when God touched him.
Dedicating his life to God, he literally burned himself out in His service in England and America. Whitefield addressed his last audience at Newburyport, Massachusetts, standing on the stairway of a manse, speaking by the light of a flickering candle he held in his hand. When the candle burned out, he went upstairs to bed and died the next morning, at the age of 55.
