There is a breed of men of whom are the discoverers of continents, the challengers of uncharted seas and untraveled deserts, the tamers of daunting mountains, and the conquerors of wild rivers. We call them, variously, explorers, adventurers, pioneers. From that group have come pioneers for God--Paul, Livingstone, Carey, Patton, La Rue, the Stahls. Of that breed was John Matteson.

Danish born, he moved with his family to Wisconsin in 1854. Converted in 1859, he immediately began to witness to his new faith. Traveling from place to place as a lay preacher and, later, as an ordained minister, he was unintimidated by floods and storm, opponents and hardship. This intrepidity stood him in good stead when he decided to produce literature for Scandinavians, and when, in 1877, he was asked to go to Scandinavia as a pioneer missionary, where he was confronted by many difficulties and obstacles.
