In 1999 Byron Comp awoke from a restful sleep and found that he was becoming paralyzed. The diagnosis was Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), an inflammatory disorder of the peripheral nerves that often causes paralysis of the legs, arms, breathing, muscles, and face. Within days of the onset, the author was in a hospital ICU, hooked up to a life support system and fighting for his life. With no knowledge of this disease, Comp and his friends and family had no recourse but to count on a medical staff that was both supportive and neglectful. In this book, the author shares his thoughts and emotions as he is faced with the challenges of learning to talk, walk, eat, and swallow, while at the same time struggling with what it means to lose, not only our bodily controls, but our dignity, privacy, and sense of self-worth.

This book is intended to introduce the public to this devastating illness and its potential for ravaging the healthiest among us. At the same time, the author intends to provide a public forum where those with GBS can learn and share. By making the public more aware of GBS, while at the same time helping new victims and offering support to those families struggling to understand and deal with this illness, perhaps more doors will open and scientific research will be accelerated.
