First, as most of its customers and friends know, Harris Pines Mills is a church-owned industry. Many people refer to the company as "the church" and do so out of sincerity and respect. How, they ask, did the Mills become the property of a church, and how does this affect company policies and operations?
Second, Harris Pine Mills is also of interest because it is not merely a sawmill, but an integrated industry. It operates tree farms and builds and maintains roads. It fells timber, hauls the logs with its own truck fleets, and operates sawmills. It seasons, surfaces, and manufactures lumber, and then produces furniture, finished and unfinished, and sell the product.
Another aspect of the Mills which deserves to be better known is that special attention is given to providing young men and women with employment to help pay their way through college. When these students graduate, some accept calls to serve in schools and hospitals in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the islands of the sea, in what amounts to a private "Peace Corps" sponsored by their denomination. Thus, the company's influence extends far beyond Pendleton, Oregon, to the remotest part of the globe.
Finally, this is the story of a man who has added another chapter to the story of the "American dream"; who wanted to enter a business with no blind alleys, no upper limits to growth and success; who, by dint of hard work, ingenuity, and trust in God, achieved far more than he hoped to achieve.
