Suddenly Heck felt his father's eyes on him. The Sunday school superintendent was getting up to announce the song, but Deacon McEachern was staring at Heck as though the boy had turned into the devil himself. For a second the boy couldn't imagine what was wrong. He looked behind him.

"It's you, boy," the deacon hissed between clenched teeth. "Your teeth are black. It's an imp of Satan you are, climbing the bluffs and eating chokecherries on the Lord's day." Anger furrowed the man's face. "I'll teach you to yield so easily to the tempter and set your very soul in peril! After church, mind you!"

Bewildered, his brain reeling, Heck stood for the opening hymn. Intuition, aided by unpleasant memories, told him that his father meant to teach him with a strap in hand. Just thinking of it made his heart speed up and started the sweat oiling his hands. The instant the hymn was over and everyone knelt for prayer, he slipped noiselessly from his place, tiptoed down the aisle, and darted out the door. Once out of the church, he rain like a frightened rabbit.

Although Heck ran away from home, he could not escape his longing for the relationship with his father that he had never known. How he found the love of both a human father and a heavenly Father is a story you will never forget.
