Description
About the Book
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) therapy has been successfully used for the past thirty years for those who have suffered PTSD in the military. Recently it has been recognized as a useful therapy for other forms of trauma. For the author of this book, it was a lifesaving means of reprocessing painful experiences from her upbringing that continued to affect her life.
What makes this book extraordinary is Pflugrad’s willingness to excavate her most painful memories - from being unwanted before birth to navigating alcoholism as a teenager and suffering through abusive relationships. The author reveals how these experiences created what she calls a “God hole”—an emptiness she tried to fill through addiction and destructive behaviors.
The heart of the book focuses on Pflugrad’s transformative experience with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. Her detailed explanations of how EMDR works to reprocess traumatic memories provide hope for readers suffering from similar wounds. The therapy sessions described are emotionally intense, placing readers alongside the author as she confronts devastating realizations about her childhood.
Pflugrad writes with remarkable candor about her religious faith, avoiding both sentimentality and judgment. Her spiritual journey parallels her psychological one, as she learns to accept God’s unconditional love after experiencing only conditional love in her family of origin.
This memoir is not an easy read—it confronts sexual abuse, neglect, and generational trauma head-on. However, it’s precisely this honesty that makes the book so powerful. Pflugrad’s willingness to share her darkest moments creates a profound connection with readers who may recognize aspects of their own stories in hers.
By the book’s conclusion, readers witness Pflugrad’s remarkable transformation from a woman defined by trauma to one who has found wholeness through therapy, faith, and self-acceptance. This inspiring memoir offers hope to anyone struggling with childhood wounds while demonstrating the life-changing potential of EMDR therapy when combined with spiritual growth and self-compassion.
