This is a book for the young: the young child, the youth, the young adult. For it appeals to that in our hearts which never grows old: the love of nature and of living things.
You can read all the animal books but you will hardly find one with more charm, humor or naturalness than How's Inky?
Inky is a porcupine--and a cuter porcupine never grew quills. He is inquisitive, independent, naughty, lovable. Sam Campbell wouldn't part with him for the world.
The summer of the book, Tom Norton, known as the Judge, and a lively boy named Bobby are staying with Sam in the North Woods. Everything seems peaceful, but the Judge warns that something is bound to happen soon. It does. When they return from a canoe trip that night the cabin is minor riot of confusion. Rascal the raccoon is responsible for that.
The next day they adopt a fawn and name her Bobette after Bobby. Anyone who finds an injured animal or a young animal left alone brings it straight to the Sanctuary. Sausage, a baby woodchuck, is the next arrival--then two baby raccoons.
Just when the animal orphanage seems to be settling down to normalcy, Inky arrives. Only three days old, he is black as ink and about the size of a baseball with a tail on it. He'll snuggle up in your arms one minute and bite your ear the next.
The pranks of Inky and his friends make you sympathize with Bobby and laugh at the same time. And while you laugh, you learn some things worth knowing from animals and the care of animals--kindness, individuality, patience, courage, friendliness.
