One dark day while driving down a country road, I shouted with finality, “Leave me alone, God.” Growing up in a strict home environment I “heard” this message: “Do your best—then God will do the rest.” I worked hard at being good, but in midlife, desire for perfection accelerated. Unfortunately the weakness of the flesh couldn't keep pace with the heart's desire. Slowly my gaze turned inward. My struggle for perfection ripened into an undetected, subtle state of legalism. After many years I finally gave up to despair and hopelessness, resulting in rejection of God. Fifteen years later, however, God penetrated my mind with His uncontaminated formula of the gospel and hope was restored. I cannot praise Him enough. He set my feet upon a rock. He has put a “new song in my mouth.”
