"I am convinced that Hebrews is not the enigma that we usually think. We may be certain that the pamphlet's author wrote it to be understood in it's own day--and not just by the professors of the New Testament! The early Christians did not include many learned and educated men (see 1 Corinthians 1:26-28), yet Hebrews was aimed at them. Indeed, as we shall see in chapter 1, the book has a practical purpose-a point often missed by those who lose themselves in its theological thickets. And we may be confident, I think, that the early Christians understood it.
The modern believer may also grasp Hebrews. the document will not yield its message easily, however. Its closely knit reasonings calls for a degree of concentration that we are less used to than our forebears were. The modern age with its Madison Avenue veneer has dulled our powers. And we must be prepared to listen to the writer. In practice that is the hardest part of Bible study. We continually inject our own conceptions into the text. With Hebrews, our fault becomes doubly bad, since the book's ideas are so unlike current conceptions or other parts of the New Testament. Only as we sit back and let Hebrews open to us its message in its own terms can we understand it. But then we may indeed grasp it-in its wholeness."
