A man of many gifts and talents, David Livingstone excelled as physician, navigator, geographer, explorer, naturalist, writer, and missionary. Single-handed, and dependent almost completely on his own resources, he opened the interior of the African continent to civilization and to Christianity. The world was fascinated by his magnificent courage.
Livingstone's only traveling companions were his faithful African friends, with whom he ate and slept, endured storms and floods, slogged through swamps, was bitten and stung, and was threatened by hostile warriors. He loved the people of Africa, and they loved him. In Chief Sechele, for instance, he recognized a kindred spirit, and the two entered upon a lasting friendship.
Perhaps the supreme evidence of their affection was the touching devotion of Susi, Chuma, Jacob, and the others who accompanied Livingstone, sick and utterly weary, on his last journey. After his death they embalmed his body in salt and, in the face of great personal danger and hardship, carried him for nine months and over 1,500 miles to the coast--because they wanted the one they loved and honored to be buried in his own homeland.
