The Solomon Islands were first discovered in 156 7 by Alvaro de Mendana, under the colors of Philip II of Spain, after a long and soul-trying voyage remarkably similar to that of Columbus when he sailed to the New World. The Isles of Solomon, as they were named, were lost and found again more than once before they were firmly established in the geography books and on the mariners' charts. Thus the author starts us on the history of these South Pacific islands, of which so little has been written even though they are so prominently in the world's news today. He carries the reader through the sorry chapters of head-hunting and early mission experience as well as the later triumphs of the gospel of Christ in bringing sin-darkened savages to the light of heavenly truth. The story is brought right up to date in his recital of the forced abandonment of the islands by foreign missionaries before the invading armies of Japan. Anyone who reads this inspiring volume and studies the maps of the area described will be able to understand the breadth and greatness of the Solomons and the changes that have been wrought by the coming of the missionary. Written out of actual experience and adorned with fine photographic illustrations, it is the next best thing to a visit tot he islands themselves.
