The events described in this book concern conditions met by missionaries in the swampy interior of British Guiana (now Guyana), Venezuela, and Brazil more than a quarter of a century ago. The great strides make in these countries during the intervening years are a credit to the people. In Guyana literacy has reached 80%, with 160,000 enrolled in its more than 400 schools. Roads are rapidly being built to accommodate the rising economy in agriculture and industry, and airlines connect the country with all parts of the world. English is the official language, and the impact of civilization has upgraded the national culture. A comparison of the primitive interior as known and presented here by the Cotts with contemporary progress affords an interesting contrast.
