Who are the kings of the east (or sunrising in some Bible translations), and why it is of such great importance to Christians? The identity of these kings from the east was not in question among Seventh-day Adventist Bible scholars until the early to mid 20th century. Even then, most of our seminaries and colleges held in common the definition promoted by the early Advent pioneers.

Why the change, and what difference does it make in our end-time message?

The attempt of many to define the kings of the east as earthly, political powers hides the true meaning and triumphant promise held in Revelation 16:12 and similar texts. Identifying prophetic entities as earthly kings and kingdoms opens the Bible student to the unpredictable sway of the current political climate, to conjecture, and to losing our reputation for faithful interpretation of scripture. As one global crisis passes and another looms, and each is declared to be a positive harbinger of the soon-coming Armageddon cataclysm, focus is taken off of the personal call that Christ extends to each and every individual to be ready for His coming.

While nations and rulers will continue to be players on the field as time draws to a close, the real conflict is between God and Satan, and prophecy points us to the confidence we have in the promises of God. We know how the story ends, and we won’t be led astray if we focus on the real issues.

Allow the Bible to interpret its own truth in this crucial end-time promise. Don’t be swayed by every change of political wind, but keep your eyes on Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our Faith.
