Why are the Psalms so greatly loved? First of all, because they express the deepest needs and longings of the human heart. Someone has suggested that most of Scripture speaks TO us, while the psalms speak FOR us. As it is with blank checks, we may read our own names and circumstances into them.
The psalms portray the greatness and majesty or Israel's God, while at the same time presenting Him as a personal, caring, and loving Father, listening to the cry of His children, responding to their needs, and answering their prayers. Pagan poets of Israel's time eulogized their gods, yet had to admit their remoteness and unconcern. But the psalmists tell of "my God," "my shepherd," "my rock." They could approach Him with their complaints, doubts, fears, and even their anger. And still trust in His great mercy and forgiveness.
