Looking For a Better Country is the story of a young couple who got married and left Germany in 1938, a year before the second World War. It describes their odyssey through four countries: Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and the United States, detailing their struggles to make ends meet in difficult circumstances - at first without the Lord. Peter was only a nominal Lutheran, while Helen had become an atheist through the teachings of Charles Darwin at school.
The book answers the questions: can anyone honestly be an atheist? Yes, it is possible, as it shows Helen's utter devastation when their baby dies. But this is the turning point, for with it she begins a journey back to Christianity and into the Seventh-day Adventist church.
At the end of the book Helen looks back over their life. She thought of situations for which there was no human solution. She also remembers when Peter has an almost fatal heart attack in 1955. He was only 45 years old. He recovered when prayer was offered for him. She realizes how God has guided them, and sustained them even before she knew He existed.
