When the apostles preached, it was not mere philosophy or psychology, it was mighty saving truth--not the crucifixion but Christ crucified. The emphasis was always on Christ as a Person, the One who had become the Way and the only way back to God. They read from the ancient Book of Job God's great Declaration, "Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom" ("an atonement," margin), and those heralds went out to share the good news. Their message was Christ crucified, risen, ascended, and coming again. And by the power of their Spirit-filled preaching they "turned the world upside down." (Acts 17:6.) My earnest hope is that he who reads these pages may come to understand and love Him better.
