When thirteen-year-old Maria Hilerio's mother died, the bereaved child wasted away with grief and nearly died. But "Mother" had not abandoned her family. A spirit appeared at night and announced, "It's only Mother, Maria. I've come to tuck you into bed." In time, through Dona Baron's helpful interest, Maria learned a great deal more about the dead, about spirits, about the occult world. She became a miracle healer and rejoiced to see her patients relieved of their sufferings through her exercise of witchcraft.

Still the young medium searched for answers to her nagging questions. Spirit guides were supposed to be "good," yet some of them were not. Mediums through whom good "spirit guides" worked to heal people were--well, sometimes they were like that villain Pascual Molino from whose evil clutches Maria narrowly escaped. Follow Maria's strange adventures as she moves from Puerto Rico to New York and at last begins to understand, and find, the treasure she has been looking for during most of her life.

Winnie Zerne, the author, has personally traveled to Puerto Rico to do research for the writing of the story. Maria, Daughter of Shadow is an absorbingly interesting biography, but it is much more than that. Many who read about Maria will find that they will never be the same again.
