It was anything but quiet on the Russian Front.
"Here we were - young men who had nothing against each other; front-line soldiers drafted to do a job we didn't want; shooting at each other, killing each other, not because we wanted to...but because someone hundreds of miles away ordered it."
The two great dictators of the twentieth century, Adolph Hitler and Joseph Stalin, were calling the shots. By the end of World War II, German military losses would account for 64 percent of all Axis combat deaths of all the Allied forces.
My Enemy, My Brother is a true story of a young German Adventist soldier on the Russian Front. Georg Grellman was nineteen when he was drafted into the German army infantry. "Just do what you have to do to try to survive," was the advise of a more seasoned comrade.
One day after his twentieth birthday he was injured by a tripped mine. Shrapnel cut deeply into his thigh. He would later refer to it as "the mine that had saved my life." He had not been wounded by it, he most likely would have died with the 250,000 others at Stalingrad.
In the two additional years he would serve in the war, he would sometimes feel guilty for being alive. Other times he would marvel that even his comrades seemed to think he was especially protected. Many times he would reflect on his close escapes and wonder what God had planned for him in the years ahead.
He couldn't have guessed that he would be captured near the end of the war and taken to America, and then to Great Britain as a prisoner of war. Nor did he see that one day he would fall in love with a Roman Catholic girl whom he would later marry and that together they would serve the Adventist Church as missionaries in Transvaal, South Africa, and among the Hutu of Tutsi of the Republic of Burundi in East Central Africa.
