On Wings of Cheer takes the reader again to the Sanctuary in the north woods of Wisconsin. As the story opens, the country is under the enchantment of fall haze and dazzlingly brilliant foliage. Yet it is unseasonably warm, and Sam has a plain case of spring fever. Birds are influenced by the high temperatures, too, and song sparrow, purple finches and robins sing their springtime songs. Here we catch our first glimpse of Cheer, the remarkably friendly red-winged blackbird, who has delayed his migratory flight to enjoy Sanctuary hospitality.
The changing seasons form a panoramic background for forest adventures around the calendar. Sam points out exciting scenes and events a less alert observer would have missed. Many old favorites--such as the porcupines Salt and Pepper, Stubby the chipmunk, Nuisance the red squirrel--appear with new friends among the little forest folk. Hi-Bub, the city boy with an engaging lisp who was introduced in A Tippy Canoe and Canada Too, is present, making progress as a budding naturalist.
Just before the cold weather sets in, a five-hundred pound bear named Old Charley is presented to the Sanctuary. He turns out to be a serious problem. Old Charley has outgrown the game farm, and is released in the Sanctuary forest that he may become accustomed to life on his own without fear of hunters. The huge bear is quite used to people and isn't a bit afraid of them. With extraordinary talent for mischief, he enters enthusiastically into his new life and liberty. Soon the whole region is a jitter with his pranks. It's a great relief to the entire neighborhood when Old Charley finally settles down for his winter sleep.
The Campbell must leave the Sanctuary for the lecture season, but thanks to Hi-Bub they receive an invitation to return north for the holidays. There;s no stopping that determined little boy once he has his heart set on anything! The way he manages grownups is amazing. He induces his father to drive hi two hundred miles to attend one of Sam's lectures; he arranges for busy Sam and Giny to give a private show for a sick child; and takes it upon himself to plan Christmas for everyone!
The celebration of an old-fashioned Christmas in the beautiful frozen northland brings more joyous, heart-warming experiences. Then Hi-Bub realizes the fulfillment of a dream--he meets the remarkable old Indian chief, Big John Shawano!
When Sam and Giny return again in April, they have a hazardous time reaching their island home. Ice floes nearly crush their boat and then maroon them for two day until warm sunshine unlocks the frozen lake. But the opportunity to be on hand for the arrival of another glorious season makes up for all the danger. Gradually the forest awakens and all their friends among the animals return. Specks the fawn appears, and the three cute coons whom Hi-Bub names Amos, Andy and the Kingfish!
Hi-Bub continues his education as a naturalist that summer, meeting new friends, observing new things about the old ones, and learning the satisfaction of hunting with a camera instead of a gun.
On Wings of Cheer is a whole tearful of fun and wholesome adventure.
