"In my many visits to the Middle East I talked to hundreds of Arabs about Abraham," the author of Out of the City, Across the Sands tells us. "I never found one who did not know about him or couldn't tell me something about him. They refer to him as 'el Khalil,' the Friend, meaning, the friend of God."
Dr. Bork's "many visits" cover a period of eight years, during which he retraced Abraham's steps from Ur of the Chaldees in Iraq, through Haran in Turkey, to Canaan and Egypt. In doing this he used "every conceivable means of locomotion": donkeys, camels, boats, buses, and other methods. He slept on mats, ate with Bedouins while sitting on the floor, and experienced the hospitality, as well as the occasional hostility, of the Arabs. So this book is not an armchair effort, but grows out of "I was there" observations.
Dr. Paul Bork, who teaches religion at Pacific Union College, Angwin, California, is a member of the American School of Oriental Research, and the American Institute of Archaeology. Dr. Bork has had one previous book published, The World of Moses, which has been translated into Dutch.
