"Land of Uncertainty" is the author's name for Borneo. And the reader soon learns why.
Bad-luck days, when certain kinds of work are taboo, are announced by the witch doctor about seven times a month. For example, on Gogur it is unwise to build houses because builders get malaria and the shakes. On Rampagas one must not plant, for crops will not thrive. If a foreigner does not learn patience while trying to build up a mission under these circumstances, he never will.
Then there is the touching story of two orphaned children who became Christians and built their own house and earned their living by raising produce. The boy even paid his own tuition at the mission school.
Do missions pay? One has only to see the contrast in the lives of these people, so long slaves to the spirits, to answer that question. Contrast the filthy heathen longhouses with those of a Christian village. "I feel as if I have just crossed a river safely, and now I want to get all my people across, too," said one young convert.
