Growing up seems to be, for some people, uncomplicated and a happy adventure. For others it is frequently a painful and frustrating experience. The author belongs to the second class.

Bereaved of her mother when she was a sensitive 7, reared by a grandmother and minister grandfather, wrenched between the good that she would do and the evil that she would not (hence the title, Reluctant Saint, Reluctant Sinner), and wracked by the feeling that she did not fit in with her peers, Mrs. Wood relates with vivid recall her years between childhood and college before "the chord was resolved."

The description of a life lived by a youth of the 1930's and 1940's will intrigue today's youth. And the reader belonging to the author's generation will nostalgically relive his own past as he reads of hers.
