The purpose of this study is to investigate the origin, development, and theology of the remnant idea in the Old Testament where it is one of the major theological motifs. Due to the fact that the remnant motif is not limited to the Biblical writings and that it has been claimed to have its roots in either the political-social sphere of Assyria or the cultic one of Babylonia, it became imperative to examine the remnant idea in the various genres of Sumerian, Akkadian, Hittite, Ugaritic, and Egyptian literary texts. This comparative approach is not only extremely important for determining the origin of the remnant motif, and its significant place in Old Testament remnant motif, and its significant place in Old Testament thought and theology over against its appearance in the ancient Near Eastern texts.
