Two years earlier, grasping the full meaning of righteousness by faith, the fourteen-year-old girl committed herself to the Lord. Impelled to work for her young friends, she saw all but one of them make the same commitment. Called to the prophetic office at the age of seventeen, she was commissioned by God not only to encourage those around her but also to meet and check extremes and fanaticism. That first year she had her first opportunity. It was the beginning of seventy years of active labor that took her around the world. During this time she wrote 100,000 pages of counsel. Ellen was a practical Christian with a positive experience. "Do you ever," she once asked, "see me gloomy, desponding, complaining? I have a faith which forbids this. . . .
