For nearly a dozen formative years in the history of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, George I. Butler served as its leader.

Butler, the grandson of a governor of Vermont, did not become a Seventh-day Adventist until he was twenty-two years old, even though his home had long been the center of Adventism and he had known James and Ellen White since he was a child. But once converted, he threw his whole strength into the program of the church. When the Iowa Conference president and treasurer apostatized, its members elected Butler president, two years before his ordination.

In 1871 he became president of the General Conference. During his two terms he dealt with a number of crises facing the young denomination, including the illness of James White (which threatened to destroy the church he had built up), the question of inspiration and revelation, pantheism, and righteousness by faith. Some of the issues he struggled with still trouble the church today.

Dr. Vande Vere vividly portrays the life of George I. Butler and the world he lived in. Often he lets Butler, Ellen White, John Harvey Kellogg, and others speak through previously unpublished letters. Vande Vere depicts a man who faced problems, sometimes going down to defeat, but one who never gave up.

Rugged Heart not only brings alive a dynamic pioneer of the Seventh-day Adventist Church but also opens to the reader new insights that will help him better understand the history and issues of his church. by gaining a clearer concept of certain key crises in Adventist history, the SDA of today can more clearly grasp many important Ellen White statements.
