Daniel Morales' mother was extremely sick, growing weaker each day. She could no longer work in the fields harvesting the crops. Papa would ahve to find some kind of job where they would not have to be constantly moving on. But he could barely read--and who would hire a Chicano without an education?
Then Daniel and his family discovered that his mother's illness was more serious than they had imagined. She would soon die unless she had a delicate heart operation. But the Moraleses had no money for such expensive surgery.
Another problem bothered Daniel. When Daniel asked his father if he could go to school, Papa sadly shook his head. "You don't even have any shoes," Señor Morales said. Daniel know that his family was too poor to buy the things he needed to go to school. Would he spend his life also following the crops like so many of his people?
Ernie Holyer vividly re-creates the true story of a Chicano boy and the problems he and his family had to struggle with. The author depicts the faith in God and the comfort he finds in nature, both of which sustain him.
