Hezekiah awaited the message from the envoys he had sent to Isaiah. "Well, Eliakim." The steward smiled. "Isaiah says, 'Do not be afraid of the minions--the servants--of Sennacherib. I am going to send him back to his own country, and there I will kill him with a sword.'" "Indeed!" Hezekiah exclaimed. "Yahweh will fight the battle for us."

The life of Hezekiah has been one of the most inspiring of the Old Testament. His father offered a child to a pagan idol, but he, Hezekiah, restored the temple and led the people of Judah back to the true God. In the face of seemingly inescapable defeat he clung to the promise that God would deliver Jerusalem.

But Hezekiah was also a human being. He made mistakes and had tragic failures. Yet scripture records them for our benefit. God's people in the past were real people--just as they are now. And the life of Hezekiah shows the heights and depths that we all face--and how God can lead us through both.

In the tradition of Paul T. Gibbs, Thurman C. Petty, Jr., re-creates the story of one of God's mighty men of the past. In his desire to show "that the God who lived and worked with them is the same God who lives today," Petty researched and reconstructed Hezekiah's life.
