The roar of the water drowned out all other sounds. Jim Carter crept to the brink of the ledge where the out-lunging current descended in a snowy throng of streamers. He sat hugging the smooth rock until he felt his bones begin to chill. Awkwardly reaching for a tuft of grass, he wound his stiff fingers into it and lifted his foot to ease himself back along the ledge. To his horror, the tuft of grass came loose. Panic-stricken, Jim felt himself teetering on the edge of the canyon, with only the rushing waterfall beneath him.

Jim Carter and his father eagerly had looked forward to their pack trip in the Kings Canyon area. Then Martin Royal had to go and spoil it by announcing that he and his rich uncle also were going to hike through the same majestic mountains.

The rivalry between the two boys flared up at every encounter. Martin's presence on the pack trail cast a gloomy shadow over each adventure Jim had. Then Jim's father did something that, to Jim, completely ruined the pack trip. And its climax came in the treacherous snows of Monarch Pass.

Mary Branch weaves a true story of wilderness adventure and personal conflict that will fascinate every young person.
