...I proceed to inform my reader that I have chosen the form of a novel in which to illustrate the evils of a system that is fraught with corruption and injustice, not only in California but in other parts of the United States, as well as in foreign countries.
I have made San Francisco the arena of the exploits and experiences of my various characters because I have had better opportunities in that city than in any I have visited, during the wanderings of many years, of observing frauds and trickeries the ramifications of which I have endeavored to portray. It is but just to state that the same characteristics are to be found wherever stock gambling exists.
