Every person in this story really lived and did what is described. Providence was first settled by the Arnolds, who got along well with the Indians. After they had raised one crop, the Scots, Hutchinsons, and Dyers came, with others who were persecuted by the Puritan Church of Massachusetts Bay Colony because they did not agree that only those who belonged to that church should have citizens' privileges. The Scot children of the story were born at Providence. Patience was 11 years old at the time of the story, which takes place between April and November of 1659.
