Sam Campbell and Giny (his wife) return to their North Woods Sanctuary after an absence of six months. Long before their canoe reaches the island where their cabin is located, they hear porcupines calling. By the time the canoe touches the shore, Salt and Pepper are at the water's edge to meet their human friends. Such a welcome as they give! Giny and Sam barely live through it.

Then follow weeks of adventure with these porcupines and with other friendly creatures of the forest. There are problems and pranks, hasp and mishaps that keep the Sanctuary stirred with excitement. Salt proves to be the scamp and clown of the pair, behaving like some combination of Huck Finn and Peck's Bad Boy.

Into the story comes Carol, a lovable girl of high-school age. Her capacity for getting into trouble is almost equal to Salt's. During her stay at the Sanctuary she meets many woodland animals, and learns valuable lessons from them. In the soft solitude of a forest trail at night she meets Inky, famous old porcupine philosopher. She sees Bunny Hunch and Big Boy, the bear cubs, and learns the meaning of natural strength. She hears the story of Halitosis, the pet skunk, and finds herself with a newly awakened sense of appreciation. She watches the beaver, and learns a bit about the virtue of industry and intelligence.

The story is told in family-circle language. It is about real animals. It is full of laughter, of adventure, of encouragement and hope. Says Sam Campbell, "Nature forever speaks to the childhood in our hearts. The beauty and strange ways of birds and beasts that make a child gasp with wonder thrill a grown man equally well--I want my nature stories to catch this ageless appeal."
