In his preface Dr. Hasel wrote, "The search for truth--how the human mind can be certain about reality--has been the quest of thinking men and women for ages. This quest has gripped me since undergraduate, seminary, and university days. For this reason I cannot escape the basic issue of hermeneutics--the procedure, principles, and methods of understanding and interpreting the Bible, the living Word of God."

Here in this fascinating scholarly work, easily read by the thoughtful church member, Dr. Hasel leads us through such subjects as the eclipse of Biblica authority in modern times and the reasons why, the biblical backgrounds that aid in better understanding the Bible and the principles by which the Bible should be read and correctly understood.

Special attention is given to dispensationalism and the secret rapture theory, the dating of Daniel, the relation of the creation story to Near Eastern mythology, the historicity of Jesus and the authenticity of Jesus' words. The sensational discoveries at Ebla in Syria and their bearing on the Bible are part of this book.
