William Booth's unparalleled success as a Methodist evangelist made other ministers jealous. These ministers combined their efforts, and in 1857 voted overwhelmingly to remove him from general evangelism and make him pastor of a small district.

More than anything else William wanted to preach to the urban poor, but he prayed for patience and worked as a pastor. Finally, in 1860, the showdown came. After asking for full-time evangelistic work, he was again refused. And this time--inspired by his wife Catherine--he left the Methodist Church.

Now he and Catherine and their four small children faced a bleak future. "The Lord will be with us," she assured him. "You have a message for the masses, and you must reach them."

William smiled at her. At last he felt free--free to preach the gospel, to tell the poor of God's love. Together with a growing number of followers, he and Catherine brought hope to the world's slums and gutters. In the midst of rousing evangelistic meetings and steaming bowls of soup dished up for hungry people, the Salvation Army was born.

This is the story of that Army, its conquests, and the man who started it all.
