Now she could make out the shapes of the wagons surrounding the fires. Somewhere a dog barked in the camp, and a gruff voice snapped "Shut up!" A man in a red shirt held a rifle across his shoulder with one hand and stirred the fire with the other. Sparks mingled with the smoke and drifted toward the sky. Creeping up to the nearest wagon, Catherine rested against its wheel. The man set his rifle aside and threw a pile of sticks into the flames. The embers crackled, and a shower of sparks scattered about the fire. The flames leaped higher for a few seconds, then settled back down again.
The owl hoots sounded closer as the braves neared the camp. The dog tensed, pointed its ears towards the hoots on the left, and growled. Catherine took a deep breath, and for an instant she closed her eyes. "God, don't let it happen!" she breathed.
A terrible cry pierced the air. The man at the fire leaped for his gun and fired a wild shot into the sky. Two dozen white men with rifles in their hands burst from the hoods over the wagons. An arrow hit the side of the wagon where Catherine stood, and inside a woman shrieked. Another arrow flew into the fire and sent a shower of sparks into the air. The Indian warriors rushed into the camp.
