"You ought to write a book about your experiences," my friends have often urged; but reluctant lest my experience of conversion seem to commonplace and lest the relating of my war experiences foster a spirit of animosity between national groups, I have hesitated. However, the desire to bear witness to the guiding power of God and the hope that my story will bring encouragement to other young people has led me to combine these two experiences into one story in this account of my life.

I have tried to draw a picture of life and nature and events as I have seen them, with the hope of giving those who have never been abroad a little of the feel of going to a strange land and a little better understanding of the place I visited.

It has not been my purpose to give a chronologically accurate account of facts relating to the war in the Philippines as it affected those of us who were interned at Baguio. Neither have I attempted to cover every area of camp life. And I have purposely refrained from telling some of the more unhappy experiences, especially those involving our relations with the Japanese military and police, for I feel that no good purpose can be served by repeating those experiences at this time. Rather, I have tried to give a picture of how a cross section of American and British civilians adapted themselves to internment and carried on within the limits of their circumstances a normal community life.
