About the Book

“We felt quite sure that we were still going in the right direction when, all of a sudden, we noticed the form of a man dressed in a uniform approaching us. Our hearts sank as we thought of what was about to take place. Had we come so far only to be sent back, or worse, lose our life? My father took the lead, and as the officer was now in clear view, he asked, ‘Are you escaping?’ What could my father say? It was quite obvious what our intention was. Father’s reply was, ‘Yes.’”

Find inspiration in this heart-stopping journey of a family who determined to follow God no matter what. It was illegal to be a Christian under communism, but that did not stop the Hiebert family, who, like Daniel’s three friends, said, “our God whom we serve is able to deliver us” (Dan. 3:17). Witness the unmistakable providences of God in this faith-building narrative of God’s care for His children. We serve a great God who takes note of our daily encounters of life. When life appears to be hopeless all around, there is Someone greater to turn to who will never leave us though we may face severe trials, persecution, or even the difficulties of daily struggles. The author’s desire is that readers will be touched by God’s leading and develop a greater trust in God as they travel life’s journey.

Available in PAPERBACK and eBOOK formats.

Jacob Hiebert

Jacob Hiebert, a successful businessman, pastor, and administrator of Dutch/German origin, was born in southern Ukraine. Living during World War II under the rule of communism, he and his family spent six years of his early life as refugees before coming to Canada. He holds a degree in theology and business administration. His wife Judy has shared in her husband’s work of administration in Canada and abroad. They are retired and reside in southern British Columbia. Their four children live in the western United States and Canada. The author’s favorite Bible text is Joshua 1:9, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

  1. Hard to put down when started and it is a book that must be shared. 5 Star Review

"This is a book that draws one into the past – the turmoil of the war years in Europe. Jacob and his family stared death in the face many times - when life was cheap. Throughout their trials no lies were told and God came first. My heart raced at times. The book instills in me a desire to know God better and trust Him more. It is a book that is hard to put down when started and it is a book that must be shared.
~ Murray McGill, Retired, Former Commercial Fisherman, Businessman"

  2. A Riveting Memoir 5 Star Review

TEACH Services received the following review:
"'FREEDOM’S JOURNEY' is a riveting memoir of one God-fearing family that made the monumental decision to get out of the tenacious grip of Communism. The captivating accounts of enduring the brutalities of the dark side of humans, and still putting their total trust in God with bold, childlike faith, is not only fascinating, but extremely inspiring. Their pursuit of freedom was an experience which few people are ever forced to confront.

You will not only be challenged, you will be reignited by this book.
~ Marilyn Wakefield, Retired Resort Sales Manager"

  3. An Awesome Story of God's leading 5 Star Review

"As honored friends of the Hieberts we are so blessed to review the script of FREEDOM’S JOURNEY. What an awesome story of God’s leading in their lives. We were so inspired we just had to read it in one setting. It has truly elevated our appreciation for our freedom we still have and our God of miracles. A God that loves us supremely and soon will deliver us from the bondage we are living in. This is a read you must share.
~ Leslie Berreth, General Contractor, Businessman, Musician"

  4. This is an amazing story of God’s protection, guidance and the faithfulness... 5 Star Review

Posted by on 12th Jan 2021

TEACH Services received the following review:
"This is an amazing story of God’s protection, guidance and the faithfulness of the Hiebert family in their journey to freedom. It allows the reader to experience the dangers and the deprivations that this family faced and to trace the hand of God in their deliverance.

Although I was born in England in the middle of the Second World War, I did not fully appreciate the challenges faced by those fleeing from the ravages of this conflict until I read this story. It is a well-written book that captured my attention from start to finish and made me value even more the freedom so many of us take for granted. ~ Ian Cotton, retired pastor"
