About the Book
Chasing Gratitude is a gritty, no-nonsense look at a man's self-destruction, redemption, and restitution. Divided into thirty portions, it is suitable for devotional reading or group study.
For much of his early adult life, Douglas Boyer chased someone else's dream and ended up an addict and a prisoner. As he recognized what God had done for him and the divine purpose for his life, he left his former pursuit and began chasing gratitude.
Through the medium of free verse, Douglas paints a picture of his former life, which was painful for him to live. He pours out his confession before God and man openly, remorsefully, and bravely, as one who has been a prisoner sitting in "darkness and the shadow of death" (Psalm 107:14). Addiction, as defined by Romans 7:14–25, is powerlessness! Unless you have experienced it, you cannot academically or intellectually understand it.
Douglas assures those living the lifestyle of addiction, yet who desire redemption through Christ: You are not alone. He encourages the spouses and children of those living a lifestyle of addiction: Trust that God surely hears your prayers.
~ Dr. Neville Patricq Butler, Doctor of Theology, UCLA; pastor, Narrow Gate Church, Charlotte, North Carolina; co-founder, Unshackled Substance and Alcohol Recovery Ministry; former, felon, gang member, and addict
“…for those whose family deals with the horrors of addiction, it gives solace and hope. It will also give insight for professionals and non-professionals who wish to help people under the helplessness of addiction.” ~ Kevin Morgan, editor

TEACH Services received the following review:
Based primarily on poems written during his incarceration, Chasing Gratitude: A Journey of Recovery in Free Verse, by Douglas R. Boyer, is a personal catharsis and reconciliation in one man’s journey from addiction to sobriety with gratitude. As with most poetry, it uses imagery that requires reflection, yet the author provides hints to better understand his meaning through introductory essays, relevant scriptures, and thought questions accompanying his thirty thoughtful poems. As one reader described it, it will not be everyone’s cup of tea. Yet, for those whose family deals with the horrors of addiction, it gives solace and hope. It will also give insight for professionals and non-professionals who wish to help people under the helplessness of addiction.
