About the Author

Adelaide Bee Cooper was born in New York State in 1870 and at the age of 13 she began to work at the Review and Herald Publishing House in Battle Creek, Michigan. She worked as a proofreader and copy editor, and in 1899 became editor of The Youth’s Instructor. She held this post until 1904 when she married Irwin H. Evans.

During the early years of marriage, Adelaide Bee Evans kept busy writing a number of religious and inspirational books for young people. Always ready to spread the good news of the gospel, Irwin and Adelaide answered the call to be mission leaders in China in 1909. Both of the Evanses took a keen interest in the children of the missionaries, and with many of these families living in the interior of China, the letters that they wrote to these young people encouraged them in some very difficult, war time circumstances.

While in China, Adelaide wrote two more books—Really Trulies and Strange Peoples and Customs. Both of these books are full of stories about missionaries, their children, and the peoples of the native land. After retiring from mission work in China in 1930, Adelaide and Irwin moved back to the United States where Irwin served as vice president of the General Conference. Adelaide passed away in 1958 at the age of 88.
